Family opens South African shop in far-flung corner of the UK

The family-run UK business, Biltong Buddy, will celebrate the launch of its new premises at 53 Highgate on Saturday, 11 October, with a day of festivities.

The day-long event will feature food tastings, games, and giveaways. Visitors can sample Saffa favourites such as biltong, droewors, boerewors, and SA-inspired biscuits.

Biltong Buddy first began five years ago with a shop in London.

After relocating to the Lake District last summer, owner Tara Garavarian saw an opportunity to bring a slice of her heritage to northwest England.

Kendal, about a five-hour drive or just over three hours by train from London, will soon be home to the new store.

“We’re thrilled to announce the official opening of our brand new South African shop right here in Kendal,” she told The Westmorland Gazette.

“Bring your friends, family, an adventurous spirit and don’t forget to share with fellow foodies and South African expats.”

‘Friendlier’ than London

After securing a premises licence in Kendal, Biltong Buddy gave locals a first taste of South African flavours with free samples in August.

Now, with the official launch approaching, Garavarian and her family hope to add to the town’s strong sense of community.

“I’m so used to London, where everyone keeps themselves to themselves, and now we’re in Kendal where everyone has been so helpful,” Garavarian noted.

“People care about each other here, and I want my shop to have that feeling of community.”

South African shop a home from home

The new store promises to offer both Kendal residents and South African expats a taste of home – while adding a fresh splash of colour to the town centre.

“South African culture is bright and vibrant, and we are very happy, bubbly people,” Garavarian added.

“If I can bring a little of that to Kendal and put a smile on someone’s face, I’ll know I’ve done a good job.”
