A major drug bust led by the city’s Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Public Safety, Dr. Mgcini Tshwaku, has resulted in the seizure of dagga (marijuana) with an estimated street value of R21 million in Sandton.
The operation, a significant blow to drug syndicates, was a swift success following an intelligence tip-off. Dr. Tshwaku, deployed by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), personally oversaw the decisive action earlier this week. The breakthrough was credited to the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Tactical Response Unit, whose intelligence proved critical.
Acting rapidly on the information gathered, the JMPD team successfully intercepted the massive consignment of narcotics before it could be distributed across the city. The seizure not only prevents the drugs from reaching the streets but also signals a serious offensive against organised crime in Johannesburg’s most affluent suburb.
Following the bust, authorities confirmed that all evidence has been secured and formally handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) Sandringham station for a full investigation.
