In a surprising move, KFC Africa has announced plans to release its world-famous secret recipe.
Chief Marketing Officer Grant Macpherson explained that the brand feels this is the right time to share what has long been one of the food industry’s most closely guarded secrets.
“People have been asking us for years about our secret recipe,” he said. “They have guessed, begged, and even tried to replicate it. Now we believe it’s time to let the world in. Transparency can only strengthen our connection with our customers and with South Africa.”
The decision may appear risky to some, but Macpherson insists it is a step in the right direction, with more details set to be revealed soon.
“There’s bound to be speculation about why we’re doing this, and why now,” he said. “Some may wonder if revealing the recipe will take away the magic that has made us the leading quick-service brand in South Africa. We do not believe that will happen. On 8 October, everything will be explained.”
The handwritten recipe, created in 1940 by Colonel Harland Sanders, has long been one of the most closely guarded trade secrets in the world, stored in a digital safe at KFC headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky.
Speculation around the recipe is nothing new. In 2016, a reporter from the Chicago Tribune claimed to have been shown a handwritten list of 11 herbs and spices by Joe Ledington, a nephew of Colonel Sanders. KFC, however, denied its authenticity, stating the recipe was “not accurate.”
On Friday morning, Siz The World weighed in on the decision, also touching on claims by a man who says he is Colonel Sanders’ great-great-nephew and who accuses the company of exploiting his uncle’s image for financial gain.
