ECONOMICS will take a big step towards his return to the track with a racecourse gallop at Newmarket on Saturday morning.
The injury-plagued star has been on the sidelines for almost a year, but he will stretch his legs at the Rowley Mile before racing.
It has been an incredibly frustrating year for William Haggas, who is trying to get him back for the Champion Stakes in a fortnight.
The four-year-old was being aimed towards the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot but suffered an injury in the lead-up to the race and has been on the comeback trail ever since.
And now Haggas is in a race against time to get the colt to the Champion Stakes on October 18, for which he is 16s with the bookies.
Haggas said: “He will work at Newmarket around half an hour before the first. The point of the gallop is to get him back on a course with people around and get his adrenaline up a bit.
“He will just work with a lead horse, it’s not going to be a serious piece of work but it’s just to get him back on the swing of things as he’s not had a race for nearly a year.
“I think it will do him some good and he’ll have a couple more pieces of serious work between now and Ascot.
“It would be great if we could get him there. I’m not going to force him but we are squeezing now.
“He picked up his injury two weeks before Royal Ascot which really mucked things up for us. I’m past talking about degrees of confidence getting him there, what will be, will be.
“The good thing is, as long as he stays fit and well, he will be back as a five-year-old.”
First things first, Haggas has an eye on the Prix de la Foret with More Thunder this weekend.
The impressive Hungerford Stakes winner will head to Longchamp on Sunday for a crack at the big seven-furlong Group 1.
Haggas added: “He is in very good form. His improvement this year has surprised me, to be honest, and he was impressive at Newbury.
“As long as they go a good pace, and there should be a good amount of pace on, I am hopeful he will run a big race.”
