French authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death, but early reports suggest may have been a suicide.

Family Expresses Gratitude and Seeks Clarity

In a statement, the Nathi Mthethwa family said they are comforted by the unity and compassion shown by fellow South Africans during this difficult time.

They acknowledged the ongoing transparency and cooperation from French authorities and said they are awaiting further clarity from the investigation before making any further statements.

“We take solace in the solidarity and support extended by the public and officials. This has helped us navigate this painful period,” the family said.

The family has also expressed unhappiness with how they were initially informed of Mthethwa’s death.

While details remain limited, the matter has prompted wider calls for greater sensitivity in diplomatic protocols regarding the notification of next of kin.

Calls for a Thorough Investigation

Chairperson of Parliament’s international relations committee, Supra Mahumapelo, has called for a comprehensive and transparent investigation, warning that speculation must be avoided.

“We owe it to Ambassador Mthethwa and his family to ensure the truth is uncovered without delay or misinformation,” Mahumapelo said.
