10-hour water outage will affect these areas in Cape Town

The City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will conduct planned maintenance work in parts of Wynberg on Tuesday, 28 October, resulting in a 10-hour water outage. The interruption will occur between 8:00 and 18:00 as technicians connect a newly installed water pipeline along Cogill Road and Oak Avenue to the existing network.

According to the City, “This critical maintenance work is done on our water supply infrastructure to benefit customers.”

The team will also install two valves in Langley Road, between Wellington Avenue and Fleming Road, which will affect nearby areas, including Piers Road, Cogill Road, Oak Avenue, Mortimer Road, Devonshire Road, and surrounding streets.

The city said it regrets any inconvenience caused by the temporary disruption but emphasised that the work is vital to improve reliability and reduce future unplanned water outages.

Prepare in advance for the water outage

Residents are encouraged to store water before the maintenance begins.

“Residents are advised to store enough water in advance as a precautionary measure. Water should be stored in clean, sealed containers,” said the city.

Furthermore, while not all homes may experience the water outage, residents are urged to take precautions to avoid being caught off guard. The city explained that maintenance sites will be classified as construction zones, which are off-limits to the public for safety reasons.

The city has assured that it planned the shutdown to minimise inconvenience.

“Careful consideration has been given to the planning of this work to ensure it is being done at a time that is least disruptive to the water supply,” the city added.

What to expect after water restoration

After water is restored after the water outage, residents might notice temporary discolouration or a milky appearance. The city explained this as usual, and due to trapped air in the pipes.

“If left to stand in a glass, the appearance will become clear, like normal,” it said.
