10-hour water outage to affect parts of Cape Town

The City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will temporarily shut down the water supply in parts of Sunnydale on Tuesday, 21 October, from 8:00 until 18:00. The planned work aims to connect a newly installed 350mm diameter steel water pipeline along Kommetjie Main Road to the existing supply infrastructure.

According to the city, the water outage will affect properties supplied by the water mains in Chasmay Road, Pokela Road and Lekkerwater Road.

“This critical maintenance work is done on our water supply infrastructure to benefit customers,” said the city in a statement.

The project involves installing, repairing, and replacing pipes and valves to ensure the long-term reliability of the water network. Residents are urged to prepare for the temporary disruption.

City urges residents to store water and stay safe

The City advised residents to store enough water in advance in clean, sealed containers for household use during the water outage.

“This precaution does not guarantee all residents will have a water disruption, but it aims to ensure they are able to prepare in the event it does occur,” the statement added.

Residents are also reminded to keep taps closed to prevent water loss or damage once the supply is restored. After the reconnection, the water might appear milky or discoloured due to trapped air in the pipes, but it will clear if left to stand.

“The city sincerely regrets any inconvenience caused,” the Directorate said, emphasising that the work has been carefully scheduled to minimise disruption.

Construction sites off-limits to the public

All areas where maintenance or upgrade work takes place are regarded as construction zones and are strictly off-limits to the public for safety reasons.

The city also cautioned that some maintenance tasks can be more complex than expected, possibly extending the restoration time.

Residents can follow @CityofCTAlerts on X (formerly Twitter) for real-time updates on maintenance progress and the location of water tankers, should they be deployed.
